CANOEING TRIP TO SIIPONJOKI/RAHJA’S ARCHIPELAGO

Kalajoki Sand Dunes is for sure the ultimate summer hang-out, but there is more to discover in the backcountry. By
canoes we get to discover either Siiponjoki river or Rahja archipelago, depending on prevailing weather conditions and
the time of the year. The route of the day has been decided on by the guide the same morning. Canoeing in these
beautiful settings is an unforgettable experience for anyone!
Discover Siiponjoki river meandering through sand ridges and the tall pine tree forests. This is a Natura 2000 area and
has protected rapid areas and the downstream dune area. A snack is enjoyed at one of the campfire sites along the
river. The river slowly takes you towards its outlet to Bothnian Bay.
You might instead be experiencing wonderful Rahja archipelago by paddling through land rise areas and coastal
landscapes, from the vast coastal meadows to the scattered bird islets. Your guide knows the archipelago and will
introduce you to its nature. At a landing site, picnic is served.

HIKING TRIP BY SIIPONJOKI
On this tour you get to know the tall pine tree forests and the meandering river, that cuts through the sandbanks all the
way to the sea. We recommend this tour for children from 6 yrs.
At the Safarihouse we have a look at the map and planned route and start the hike from there. You are accompanied by
a local guide, hiking along Siiponjoki’s nature trails. The hike takes you through barren pine forests to the riverbank. On
the way you can watch e.g., sand ramparts of the ancient beach. Siiponjoki has a considerable historical and geographical
value and is protected area. The river has some smaller rapids and flows into the Bothnian Bay.
During the snack break we fry sausages and have some hot beverages at a lean-to shelter.Duration: 2-2,5 hrs

COASTAL JETSKI SAFARI
JetSkis are so much fun and thanks to their agility and speed, you can discover a vast area in short time. Once you get
into the driving it feels like flying over the water. This tour is available for adults and children min 12 yrs (passenger).
We take off from the Sand Dunes area and drive towards the archipelago, where we make our way in between the
islands and islets. Once you get used to the feeling of driving on water this is pretty much cruising and admiring the
views. We make a stop on a nice landing spot and enjoy a snack and chat about the local archipelago life. On the way
back to the Sand Dunes, you will have a relaxed feeling and for sure return to Safaritalo smiling.

EXPLORE THE AUTONOMOUS MAAKALLA ISLET
Once upon a time, as Finland was under Swedish reign, the Swedish King gave autonomy to the fishermen of Maakalla.
This was in 1771 and it has not changed since then. Let’s discover this peculiar little island by JetSkis. This tour is
available for adults, and we recommend single driving.
Maakalla is located 18 km from Kalajoki Sand Dunes, out on the open sea. It is a bit of a rough ride there and we start
with thorough driving and safety instructions. After you have gotten used to the JetSki, you will be cruising all the way
to Maakalla. The island is still inhabited by fishermen or descendants of the fishermen who go the island from the King
of Sweden. On arrival we are met by a fisherman, a real local, who knows the stories of fishing, seal hunting and sea
faring.
There is a small museum, a 18th century chapel and vicarage on the island, in addition to the little harbor and the
picturesque cottages. Our local fisherman takes us to get some freshly smoked whitefish from the harbor and if truth
be told – this is one of the most delicious things you ever tasted! In addition, there are some other snacks and
beverages.
JetSkiing back to our time and Kalajoki Sand Dunes, you will for sure ponder about this little island and its magical

SUP-INTRODUCTION FOR BEGINNERS

SUP as in Stand Up Paddleboarding has become a very popular water sport and is a perfect way to get around shallow
and safe waters. We teach you the basics of SUPing and hope to ignite your interest for this sport.
The SUP introduction covers the basics of proper and safe practice. You get to know the equipment and get to try
different board and paddle options in a safe, shallow body of water. You only need normal outdoor equipment for the
introduction course.

Winter:

SNOWSHOE HIKING

Snowshoe hiking gets the blood flowing and the cheeks red. A snowshoe hike usually lasts 1 to 2 hours. At Safaritalo, we change into winter overalls and put on decent snowshoes. A quick guide to the secrets of snowshoeing and we start hiking on the forest trail towards, for example, Valkeavesi campfire site. We enjoye our lunch in the woods. Group size 4-30 people.

Sliding snowshoe hiking

A mixture of alpine skis and snowshoes, that is how to best describe the skin-based fun and steady sliding snowshoes.
Discover a new sport and some untouched snowy grounds!
At the Safarihouse, we change into overalls and put on proper winter shoes. Then we get to know the sliding
equipment, after which we are ready to ski on pristine slopes and snow-covered sandbanks. We make a break at a
lean-to shelter (laavu), where you can enjoy a snack, a tasty pie, while admiring the nature.

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING TRIP/ICE SKIING

On a guided ski trip, we get to know the technique of cross-country skiing. At the same time, you will also get to know Hiekkasärkkä’s excellent trail network. Weather permitting, ice skiing is also possible. If you are fit and the sea is frozen, the journey can continue all the way to the self-governing island of Maakalla. On a ski trip, we sip hot drinks and fry sausages. The duration of the excursion is 1-2 hours. Group size 4-20 people.

The wonderful sandy terrains of Hiekkasärkkä are perfect for nordic walking. Put your outdoor clothes on and get to know nordic walking with the guidance of a professional. The walking terrain is chosen according to the wishes of the group. The wonderful long sandy coastline raises the pulse high and relaxes the shoulders. And the scenery is unparalleled! Duration 1-2 hours. Group size 4-100 people.

Winter fishing with friends 1,5 hrs

Fishing is a traditional livelihood in Kalajoki, however, there are not many professional fishermen around anymore.
Many retired fishermen spend winter days out on the ice, checking the nets and sharing good fisherman’s stories. Care
to join and join the real locals?
Warming sunshine, thick overalls, and biting frost. We walk from the safari house to the fishing spot and join the locals
while they check their nets. We get to have a go at ice-fishing with rods too, while we sip on some hot beverage and
enjoy a sandwich.

Cross-country ski school

In Finland cross-country skiing is regarded a national sport, everyone can do it and most people love it! This is your
opportunity to try this sport and learn about Finnish outdoor traditions.
On this guided ski trip, we get to know the technique of cross-country skiing. At the same time, you will also get to
know the excellent trail network of Kalajoki Sand Dunes. Weather permitting, skiing on the sea ice is also possible. At a
suitable point we have a break with some hot beverages and sweet buns.

Night-time sledging

A magical experience, under a starry sky, out on the frozen sea! You travel safely tucked in a sledge, pulled by a
snowmobile along the beach and out on the frozen sea.
There is no shortage of atmosphere on these tours if you want to enjoy nature in the evening. Whatever the weather
might be, the darkness and vast open space is always a fascinating combination. Once out on the sea, as the engine of
the snowmobile is turned off, you can hear the silence, the eternal stillness of nature. We enjoy hot beverage by the
campfire, enjoying the peace of nature. The guide has a telescope that you can borrow to spot star figures, cloud
formations or distant ice-eskers. With a bit of luck, you might also see the northern lights!

Hovercraft excursion to the archipelago 11:00-12:00
A hovercraft ride in the spring Rahja archipelago is an unforgettable coastal experience. Hovercrafts are used in the
archipelago and along the coast as mode of transport on insecure ice. The vessel can operate on ice. crushed ice and
water. During the ride you can sit back and enjoy the scenery of the coast and archipelago. We will make a break for a
snack, fry sausage and drink a warm drink on a beautiful spot. The hovercraft accommodates max 6 persons at a time,
and it travels up to 60 km/h.
Larger groups are taken to the archipelago in batches. 1-1,5 hrs.
